Make Sustainable Policy – Sentience Politics

How political engagement can drive sustainable food system policies and environmental protection.

Manuel Klarmann

On June 11, Aurelian Jaggi participated in the launch of the cantonal popular initiative for "Sustainable and Fair Nutrition." Eaternity supports the initiative and sees it as an important step towards promoting a sustainable society.

Here you can find the press release and event photos.

Sentience Politics promotes plant-based nutrition in Switzerland. The negative consequences of animal consumption for people are considerable (resource waste and world hunger, climate change, health), and the suffering of so-called "farm animals" is immense. A broader range of plant-based menu options benefits everyone. Since several pressing problems can be addressed at once in the field of nutrition, it offers an efficient course of action: maximum positive impact with limited resources. The position paper "Sustainable Nutrition 2020" provides the basis for municipal and cantonal initiatives as well as further proposals.

The initiative demands:

  • The canton creates a mission statement to promote a more plant-based diet. This should show the effects of animal product consumption on climate, resource and land use, health, and animal welfare. The mission statement gives recommendations for reducing the consumption of animal products and increasing the share of vegetarian and vegan menus.

  • The canton takes appropriate measures to promote the sale of vegetarian and vegan menus in the catering facilities of public institutions and other administrative bodies.

  • The canton creates incentives for chefs to further their education in preparing vegetarian and vegan dishes and ensures, within its means, that students and home economics teachers become familiar with preparing vegetarian and vegan dishes.

  • The canton expands the vegetarian and vegan food offerings in the catering facilities of public institutions and other administrative bodies and introduces a daily vegan menu in catering facilities that offer more than one menu option.

  • The canton ensures that the demands and measures according to paragraphs 1 to 4 are implemented no later than two years after the initiative is adopted.
